Abuja Under Threat: Youths Urge Wike to Act, Not Play Politics
.
In recent weeks, reports of kidnappings, armed robberies, and attacks on communities around the outskirts of Abuja have continued to send waves of fear across residents, with many lamenting that the city once regarded as the safest in Nigeria is now under constant threat.
Speaking under the banner of the Concerned FCT Youths Forum, the group urged the Minister to take urgent, concrete steps to address the rising insecurity rather than engaging in political showmanship.
According to their spokesperson, Comrade Ibrahim Adamu, the youth accused the FCT Administration of paying more attention to internal politics and appointments than to the safety of the people. “Abuja is no longer safe. People can’t travel freely, communities are being raided at night, and residents live in fear. We are calling on the Minister to act decisively. Security should come before politics,” Adamu said.
The group also appealed to security agencies to intensify surveillance, especially in satellite towns such as Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Bwari, where bandit attacks and abductions have become more frequent.
“Abuja is the pride of the nation. If the capital city is not safe, then nowhere else is safe,” the statement added. “The federal government must not allow the situation to deteriorate further.”
Many residents who spoke to reporters echoed similar sentiments, noting that the increased cost of living and insecurity have compounded the hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
The youths, however, expressed optimism that with sincerity and proper coordination, the FCT Administration can restore peace and confidence among residents.
They urged Minister Wike to engage more with local communities, traditional rulers, and youth leaders to design a sustainable security framework that addresses the root causes of the attacks rather than treating symptoms.
“Security is not about politics,” the group concluded. “It’s about protecting lives, and that must remain the governm
ent’s top priority.”
