Acting Natl Chair of PDP, Damagum May Resign Next Week as Governors Seek Unity in PDP

PDP Governors
Ambassador Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is reportedly considering stepping down from his role next week. This development follows discussions among PDP governors held in Akure, Ondo State, earlier this week.
The governors are increasingly concerned about the rising factionalism within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and are eager to foster unity as they approach the 2024 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Among those present at the meeting were key party figures, including Damagum, PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, and several governors, including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Ademola Adeleke of Osun.
The governors discussed a proposal that would allow Damagum to stay in his position until the NEC meeting, where a nominee for the party’s chairmanship from the North-Central zone is expected to be finalized.
According to sources from Daily Trust, some governors, including Adeleke, have expressed worries that the internal strife could negatively impact their political aspirations. Adeleke specifically noted that the ongoing crisis might jeopardize his chances for re-election in 2026.
The NEC meeting, set for October 24, is likely to confirm the chairmanship decision and may also establish timelines for a national convention aimed at addressing the ongoing challenges within the party.
