After 18 Years, See when FG Plan to Conduct Another Population and Housing Census – NPC Chairman
Nasir Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), has revealed plans to conduct Nigeria’s next population and housing census in 2025, nearly 20 years after the last one was held in 2006.
Kwarra made the announcement during the 2024 commemoration of the Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which took place in Abuja on Thursday.
He acknowledged the challenge posed by the long delay in conducting the census, emphasizing the importance of accurate population data for informed decision-making. “A reliable census is crucial for effective planning and resource allocation. The government is fully committed to carrying out this important process, and we are optimistic that it will take place next year,” he said.
The announcement follows 18 years since Nigeria’s last census in 2006, despite the United Nations’ recommendation for nations to conduct such surveys every decade. Plans for a 2023 census were postponed under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, with the delay attributed to the intention to allow the incoming government to take charge of the process.
Kwarra stressed the far-reaching consequences of this delay, particularly in hindering strategic decisions and equitable resource distribution. He underscored the critical need for precise data to address key issues in Nigeria’s rural and underserved regions.
He also noted that the lack of up-to-date census data had impeded progress in vital areas such as sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and the promotion of social inclusion. “Accurate data is essential for addressing these challenges and ensuring that everyone, especially women and young people, can access opportunities for growth,” Kwarra added.
