Alleged Truck Tampering Lands Lagos Man in Court Over Theft Claims

A 38-year-old Lagos resident, Akin Falana, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over allegations of unlawful use of a commercial truck and tampering with its tracking system for personal gain.

As reported by The Nation, the defendant appeared in court on a two-count charge bordering on theft and conduct capable of breaching public peace. Falana, however, denied the allegations and entered a plea of not guilty.

Prosecuting counsel, SP Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the incidents occurred over a span of days between February 6 and February 14 at Coker Street, off Kofoworola in Ikeja. According to her, the accused allegedly used a truck belonging to GPC Energy and Logistics Ltd. without authorisation to transport goods.

Further details presented in court, as also noted by Vanguard, alleged that the defendant deliberately interfered with the vehicle’s tracking device during the period in question. The prosecution argued that this action was aimed at concealing the movement of the truck while it was being used for unauthorised operations.

Ikhayere maintained that the offences contravene Sections 168(d) and 340 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which address public disturbance and stealing respectively.

Presiding Magistrate, Mr Lateef Owolabi, granted the defendant bail set at ₦400,000, with two sureties required to provide the same amount. The court stipulated that the sureties must be gainfully employed and present proof of tax compliance with the Lagos State Government, a condition highlighted in court proceedings covered by PM News.

The matter has been adjourned until April 14 for further mention, as legal proceedings continue.
