Anambra CP Orders Arrest of Patrol Team After Civilian Killing
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has directed the detention of members from a patrol team involved in the shooting of a civilian along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Onitsha.Â
According to a statement from the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the directive comes after an initial investigation identified a corporal on the patrol team as a prime suspect in the incident.
Ikenga confirmed that CP Itam has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka. He called for calm and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ensure justice.
The incident occurred on October 13, 2023, when 29-year-old Chibueze Nwakor, a father of three from Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South, was reportedly shot near Sokoto Road, Main Market in Onitsha. Nwakor, who was on his way to buy food, was allegedly shot by officers from the Onitsha Area Command after he could not assist them with directions. Following the shooting, the officers reportedly fled the scene in their ash-colored Hiace bus.
Nwakor’s mother, Mrs. Dorcas Nwakor, has formally complained to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, seeking justice for her son.
