Another Bloody Night in Kogi: 27 Dead in Yagba West Bandit Raid

Tragedy struck again in Kogi State as suspected bandits unleashed terror on residents of Yagba West Local Government Area, leaving not less than twenty-seven people dead in a fresh night attack.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen invaded several communities late Thursday night, shooting sporadically and setting houses ablaze. The attackers, who reportedly arrived on motorcycles, caught the villagers unawares as they operated for hours without any immediate security intervention.
Survivors who spoke under anonymity described the incident as “a night of horror.” One resident recounted that the bandits moved from house to house, targeting men, women, and even children. “We kept hearing gunshots everywhere. People were running for their lives. It was like a war zone,” the witness said.
Local sources confirmed that about 27 bodies have so far been recovered, while several others sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. The number of casualties, however, may rise as search and rescue operations continue.
In the wake of the attack, fear has gripped neighbouring communities as residents flee their homes in panic, fearing another round of assault.
Reacting to the incident, the Kogi State Police Command condemned the attack and assured the public that investigations have commenced. The spokesperson of the Command, while confirming the incident, stated that a tactical team has been deployed to the affected area to restore calm and pursue the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, community leaders and stakeholders have renewed their calls on both the state and federal governments to intensify efforts toward addressing the rising wave of insecurity that has continued to plague rural communities across Kogi State.
As the people of Yagba West mourn yet another devastating loss, questions linger over the safety of lives and property in the state, and whether the long-promised security reforms will ever bring the desired peace to Kogi’s troubled
communities.
