Army Chief Lagbaja: Why Military Will Not Support Calls for Overthrow of Tinubu’s Government

Taoreed Lagbaja

On Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, declared that the military will not respond to demands for the removal of the democratically elected government. Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference, Lagbaja emphasized that such calls are primarily from young Nigerians who have not experienced Nigeria’s extensive period of military rule.

Lagbaja stressed that the Nigerian Army is committed to maintaining the “new prestige” it has built over the past 25 years through support for democratic governance. He emphasized that the Army will not be used to disrupt democracy for any interest group. The Nigerian Army, which has faced significant criticism in the past due to previous military regimes, is focused on preserving its hard-earned reputation.

He also noted that the Army has received substantial support from both national and regional governments, including the recent acquisition of two BELL UH-1 Huey Helicopters for various missions. Additionally, the welfare of widows and families of fallen soldiers remains a priority.

Addressing the recent nationwide hunger protests, Lagbaja acknowledged that these events highlighted the need for the Army to consider food and social security as part of national security. He mentioned that while the immediate situation has calmed, the Army recognizes that food security issues contributed to the protests.

Lagbaja announced that the Army will review its agricultural policies to enhance its farms and ranches, aiming to boost crop production and support the government’s food security efforts. The Army is also exploring partnerships with government agencies and private organizations to tackle the food crisis.

Finally, Lagbaja revealed that the Army has acquired new combat equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, rifles, and ammunition, to strengthen national security. During the conference, Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno praised the Army’s efforts and pledged state support for establishing a new Army base and other logistical needs.
