Atiku Abubakar Rejects Rumours of Political Retirement, Calls Reports “Fake News”

Former Vice President and current African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday dismissed claims that he plans to “step aside and retire from active politics,” branding them as deliberate misinformation aimed at confusing Nigerians.

In a statement released by the Atiku Media Office, the Waziri Adamawa emphasised that decisions of such political significance would only be formally communicated through his official channels. “An issue as fundamental and consequential as exiting active politics cannot, and would never, be communicated through rumours, faceless sources, or third-party fabrication,” the statement said, as reported by Premium Times Nigeria.

The former 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate described the narrative as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign designed to mislead the public, disrupt political momentum, and sow confusion. “This mischief is being driven by anti-democratic elements deeply unsettled by the growing national consensus to rescue Nigeria from the failures of the current administration,” the statement added.

Atiku’s office further clarified that the former Vice President had only met with ADC stakeholders in Adamawa State recently and had not engaged in any national-level meetings where such a decision was discussed. “Information circulating on social media about a purported meeting in which the former Vice President allegedly decided to retire is entirely false and deliberately misleading,” the release stressed.

The media office urged Nigerians, ADC members, and supporters of Atiku to disregard the claims and remain focused on the collective efforts to rebuild and strengthen the nation. The Guardian Nigeria noted that this is not the first time Atiku’s political intentions have been targeted by online disinformation campaigns, reflecting the high stakes in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
