The operation forms part of the ongoing Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), a sustained military offensive designed to dismantle armed gangs and restore peace and security across volatile regions in North‑Central Nigeria.

According to military sources, soldiers deployed under Sector 1 of OPWS conducted the raid based on credible intelligence that indicated the presence of an entrenched bandit group operating from a hideout within the area. As troops advanced on the location, a brief but intense gun battle ensued, resulting in the elimination of one suspected criminal.

Following the encounter, the soldiers systematically destroyed the camp, depriving the gang of a key operational base. Military officials say the destruction of such enclaves is intended to disrupt the ability of criminal networks to regroup and launch further attacks on innocent civilians.

Strategic Impact and Ongoing Operations
The Benue action is part of a broader push by the Nigerian Army and allied security agencies to clear bandit strongholds and terrorist hideouts across the North‑Central region. In recent months, security forces have carried out similar raids, dismantling suspects’ camps, recovering arms and ammunition, and arresting several individuals linked to violent criminality.

Authorities emphasise that the offensive aims not only to combat criminal elements but also to safeguard communities ahead of critical farming seasons and to reassure residents of their safety.
Benue Today
Local leaders and security watchers have widely welcomed the operation, noting that aggressive military action helps stem the tide of kidnappings, cattle rustling and other forms of violence that have long afflicted rural areas of Benue State. However, some communities continue to express concerns over sporadic attacks by armed groups, underscoring the enduring complexity of security challenges in the region.

Looking Ahead
While the recent action dealt a blow to one group of criminal elements, military officials assert that operations will continue unabated until all networks capable of threatening peace in Benue and its neighbouring states are dismantled. The statement from OPWS reiterated the commitment of the armed forces to decisive engagement and enhanced intelligence‑led patrols to ensure that citizens can live and work without fear.

As security forces press their advantage, the broader goal remains clear: to create conditions where communities can pursue economic and social activities without the persistent shadow of b
anditry and terror.
