Bayelsa East Senator Benson Agadaga Dumps PDP, Joins APC

Senator Benson Sunday Agadaga, representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Oil and Gas Host Communities, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a formal letter dated October 29, 2025, and addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Agadaga said his decision followed deep reflection and wide consultations about the current state of the PDP and the future of Nigerian politics.
Citing the biblical passage that “to everything there is a season,” the senator said the time had come for a change in his political journey.
Agadaga recounted his long years of service under various PDP-led administrations in Bayelsa State, beginning with his appointment in 2003 as Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism under the late Governor D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha.
He also served as Executive Chairman of the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board during Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure as governor, later becoming Special Adviser on Establishment Affairs under Governor Seriake Dickson, and Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri during the early years of his administration.
Expressing gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities afforded him over the years, Agadaga said he remained thankful to the party and its supporters for their role in his political rise.
However, he lamented the current state of the PDP, describing it as a once-great party now weakened by internal divisions and leadership crises.
> “It is disheartening to see that the once proud and largest political party in Africa has been torn apart by irreconcilable differences. The umbrella has become badly torn and is leaking profusely,” he wrote.
The senator said his decision to leave the PDP was based on his belief that the All Progressives Congress offers a stronger platform for progressive governance and national renewal.
> “After wide consultations, I have decided to think Progressive, act Progressive, and join the movement for a Renewed Hope in Nigeria,” he declared.
Senator Agadaga’s defection takes immediate effect from October 29, 2025.
He concluded his letter by assuring the Senate President and his colleagues of his continued commitment to the service of Nigeria and the people of Bayelsa East.
