Benue Law Alumni Demand Justice for Slain Colleague in Shocking Assassination
Alumni of the Class of 2007 from the Faculty of Law, Benue State University, have called on law enforcement agencies to apprehend those responsible for the killing of their fellow graduate, Mike Ofikwu.
According to reports from FIRST CLASS GISTS on November 21, Ofikwu was fatally shot by unidentified assailants who stormed his home on Otukpa Street in Otukpo, Benue State, on the evening of November 20.
A source close to Ofikwu, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the young lawyer was ambushed by two gunmen as he returned to his house. The assailants opened fire when he was waiting at his gate to be let in.
“Two gunmen were lying in wait, and as Ofikwu stood by the entrance to his house, they emerged from their hiding spot and shot him at close range,” the source said.
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident and announced that an investigation into the murder is underway.
In a statement issued to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, the alumni group expressed their outrage over the killing and demanded that authorities handle the case with the utmost urgency. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to ensure that justice is served.
The statement reads, in part:
“It is with profound sadness and strong condemnation that we, the Class of 2007 from the Faculty of Law, Benue State University, mourn the tragic and senseless death of our dear colleague and classmate, Barrister Mark Owoicho Ofikwu. His untimely death has left us devastated, and we condemn in the strongest terms this brutal act of violence.”
The alumni also highlighted the broader implications of Ofikwu’s death, pointing out that the assassination serves as a disturbing reminder of the prevailing insecurity in the country, where even legal professionals are not immune to violence.
“We urge security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to bring those responsible for this heinous crime to justice,” the statement continued. “This case must be handled with the urgency and thoroughness it warrants. Justice must be not only served but visibly delivered.”
Describing Ofikwu as a person of integrity and a staunch advocate for justice, the alumni expressed that his loss is a major blow to the legal community. They also extended their condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, and we offer our full support as they cope with this immense loss. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy inspire renewed efforts to ensure a society where justice, security, and the value of human life are protected,” the statement concluded.
For its part, the police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. “The investigation is progressing, and we express our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We are committed to ensuring justice is served,” she said.
