Benue Traditional Leader, Another Victim Killed in Suspected Herdsmen Attack in Otukpo
Tragedy struck in Benue State as suspected armed herdsmen reportedly killed Chief Anthony Adejoh, the District Head of Odugbeho in Agatu Local Government Area, along with another individual, identified as Jerry John.
The fatal incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at Otobi-Akpa, a community within Otukpo Local Government Area. Reports indicate that the victims were tending to their farms when gunmen, believed to be herders, suddenly attacked and opened fire. Their bodies were later discovered by locals who arrived after hearing gunshots.
Agatu LGA Chairman, Mr. Marvis Ejeh, confirmed the attack and mourned the death of Chief Adejoh, describing him as a devoted leader committed to peace and community development. “It’s a painful loss. Chief Tony Adejo was attacked and killed while farming at Otobi. It was the work of armed herders,” Ejeh said.
Despite the sorrow and tension, Ejeh emphasized that the people of Odugbeho remain composed and have chosen not to retaliate. “There’s no need for vengeance since the incident occurred outside Agatu territory,” he added.
He also urged Agatu farmers working in other local government areas to exercise caution and work closely with authorities to ensure their safety, as security challenges persist across the Benue South Senatorial District.
When approached for comment, Benue State Police PRO, CSP Catherine Anene, stated that official details regarding the incident were yet to be received.
