Bishops Shouldn’t Live in Poverty,” Adeboye Justifies Rolls Royce Gift to Oyedepo

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), defended the recent gift of a Rolls Royce to Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church on the occasion of his 70th birthday, asserting that clergy and Christians will face criticism if they struggle financially.
This response came amid controversy over the extravagant gift, with detractors claiming it reflects a troubling emphasis on material wealth over spiritual principles.
In a widely shared video, Adeboye addressed the backlash: “Some people were upset that a bishop received a car, questioning why a bishop should drive a Rolls Royce. As if becoming a bishop means you should live in poverty.
“Let me tell you, if you die without financial means, people will say, ‘After all your years of serving God, is this how you end up?’ If you struggle to pay your bills, they’ll ask, ‘Where is your God?’
“So, if you start driving a Rolls Royce, you’ll be criticized as well. Either way, you’ll face scrutiny—whether you live in poverty or enjoy prosperity.”
