Bode George Explains Why He Did Not Support Atiku’s 2023 Presidential Bid

Bode George

Bode George, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees, has addressed rumors regarding his lack of support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign. Contrary to claims that his decision was based on regional biases, George clarified that his opposition was due to issues within the party rather than Atiku’s regional background.

In a recent appearance on a TVC political program, George, who also recently declined a position on the PDP National Disciplinary Committee, explained that his stance was a response to what he perceived as divisive actions by Atiku during the campaign. He recounted his past support for Atiku, stating, “During Buhari’s campaign against Atiku, I was actively involved in supporting him, aligning with the party’s goals and efforts.”

George refuted accusations of tribalism, highlighting his diverse friendships and connections across Nigeria. “I have no tribal bias. My closest friend is a Fulani man, and I have many friends from various ethnic backgrounds across the country,” he asserted.

He criticized the decision to support another northern candidate following eight years of a northern presidency, arguing that this move contributed to internal divisions and weakened the party’s cohesion. “The campaign was mishandled, leading to divided votes and our eventual loss. We must review these issues thoroughly and address them as we prepare for future elections.”

George called on party members to prioritize the PDP’s unity and focus on collective goals as the party looks towards the 2027 elections.
