Borno Governor, Zulum Claims 95% of Borno Protesters Were Unaware of the Protest’s Purpose

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has claimed that 95% of the youths involved in the recent violent protests in Maiduguri were children under the age of 14.

In a broadcast addressing the people of Borno, Zulum also announced the lifting of the 24-hour curfew that had been imposed on the state.

Zulum stated, “The majority of those participating in the Thursday protests were very young children, most of whom were under 14 years old and did not understand the reasons for the protests. It is surprising to see a six-year-old holding a placard; clearly, they were guided by someone. Many of these children are not originally from Borno. While we support the Almajiri education system, it is crucial that their teachers or guardians ensure proper care for them.”

He expressed concern over the large number of Almajiri children residing in Maiduguri without adequate supervision. Zulum also reported that the protests were marred by violence and destruction, including attacks on public properties such as hospitals.

“There were several attempts by the rioters to target the Maiduguri Emergency Power Gas Plant, which were fortunately prevented by our dedicated security forces,” Zulum added. He condemned violence and urged the public to reject calls for aggression. As the curfew is lifted on Saturday, he warned that those engaging in looting or violence will face con

sequences.
