Borno State Governor, Zulum Warns Farmers and Fishermen Against Collaborating with Boko Haram

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has issued a stern warning to farming and fishing communities in Baga, urging them not to cooperate with Boko Haram insurgents. He emphasized that such collaboration poses a serious threat to the region’s peace and security.

The governor addressed residents at the palace of the district head in Baga on Wednesday, stressing the importance of sticking to areas approved by the military for farming activities.

“I urge the people of Baga and nearby communities to focus their farming efforts only in areas designated by the military,” Zulum stated. He further highlighted the need for adherence to guidelines set by both the Nigerian military and the Borno government.

Zulum’s warning follows a recent attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Dumba, Kukawa Local Government Area, which led to the deaths of 40 farmers. The governor condemned any form of support for insurgents, calling it “unacceptable and harmful to ongoing peace efforts in the state.”

In a bid to improve agricultural productivity, Governor Zulum also visited a 2,000-hectare solar-powered irrigation project in Baga, praising it as a significant step toward enhancing farming and food security in Borno. The project supports the state’s goal of reducing production costs and increasing food sufficiency, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision.

Zulum also announced plans to utilize the irrigated land for cassava farming following the wheat harvest, leveraging solar power to cut operational costs. “This initiative will revolutionize agriculture in Borno State and strengthen our position in wheat and cassava farming,” he added.

During his visit to Kukawa town, Zulum pledged to accelerate efforts in rebuilding education, healthcare, and infrastructure in the area. He also commended the 101 Special Forces Battalion for their bravery and assured them of the state government’s continued support.
