BREAKING: Abuja Court Frees Sowore on Self-Recognizance in Tinubu Defamation, Cyberstalking Case

In a significant legal development on Tuesday, an Abuja court granted bail on self-recognizance to human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, following charges bordering on alleged defamation and cyberstalking of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The ruling came after a tense court session in which Sowore, well known for his outspoken activism and criticism of government policies, maintained his innocence and insisted that the charges were politically motivated. Prosecutors had accused him of using online platforms to publish materials deemed defamatory and harmful to the reputation of the President.
Justice of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ruled that the prosecution had not provided sufficient grounds to justify detaining Sowore pending trial. The court emphasized that bail is a constitutional right and that self-recognizance was appropriate given Sowore’s public profile and history of honoring previous court summons.
Sowore’s legal team welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for free speech and a reminder that criticism of public office holders should not be criminalized. They argued that the charges represent an attempt to intimidate journalists and silence dissenting voices across the country.
Outside the court premises, supporters and civil society groups gathered to express solidarity, chanting slogans and calling for the protection of press freedom. Many hailed the ruling as a step toward safeguarding democratic values in Nigeria.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to Sowore’s longstanding activism and previous clashes with authorities. As the trial progresses, analysts say the outcome could shape broader conversations around digital expression, accountability of public officials, and the legal limits of online criticism.
Sowore is expected to return to court on the next adjourned date as the matter proceeds to full trial.
