BREAKING: Federal High Court in Kano Delays Ruling on Emirate Dispute

The Federal High Court in Kano has delayed its judgment on the Council Repeal Law 2024, rescheduling the decision to 2 PM on Thursday. Initially set for 12 PM today, the ruling was postponed shortly before noon.

This case stems from recent actions by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who dethroned the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and abolished the creation of four new emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—established by his predecessor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The same law reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II, ousted in 2020, as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, has challenged the legality of this new law. Represented by lawyer Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), Danagundi has requested the court to declare the law invalid.

Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, who received the motion last Friday, adjourned the case to Thursday to consider the request. The judge will also rule on a stay of proceedings requested by A.G. Wakil, the lawyer for the State Attorney General and Kano State Government, who are involved in the lawsuit against Danagundi.

This case is pivotal as it will influence the future of the emirate system in Kano.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has urged the public to remain peaceful and law-abiding as the court delivers its ruling. In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, emphasized the commitment to protecting lives and property and warned against inciting violence.

In collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, the police will enforce the ban on public protests, processions, and unlawful gatherings imposed by the state government. “Violators and their sponsors will face legal consequences,” Kiyawa stated. “Adequate security personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order.”

The public is encouraged to cooperate with security forces and provide actionable information to preserve peace. Non-state actors, including vigilantes and hunters, are advised not to participate in security operations.
