BREAKING: Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Defects from PDP to APC

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was confirmed on Monday through a statement released by the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka. According to him, the decision followed a series of consultations with political leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.
He explained that after extensive discussions with stakeholders, the governor resolved that moving to the APC would better serve the interests of stability, progress, and long-term development in Zamfara State.
The statement noted that the decision was largely influenced by ongoing internal disputes and structural challenges within the PDP at both the national and state levels. These issues, it said, had created uncertainty within the party and could potentially affect effective governance in the state.
Anka added that the governor remains focused on addressing the pressing security and developmental challenges facing Zamfara. Aligning with the APC, he said, would also allow the state to strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government and accelerate progress for its people.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting held at the Government House in Gusau, where senior government officials and key political figures deliberated on the move under the coordination of the deputy governor.
Despite leaving the PDP, Lawal expressed gratitude to party members for their support over the years, noting that current political realities made the transition necessary.
By joining the APC, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity, enhancing security, and driving development in Zamfara State through stronger collaboration with the Federal Government.
The defection comes shortly after a ruling by the Court of Appeal which upheld an earlier decision restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held in Ibadan.
With this move, the number of governors on the platform of the APC across Nigeria has now risen to 31.
