The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU Benue State University Chapter, over issues relating to promotion and earned academic allowances arrears among other issues raised by the striking lecturers may soon be called off, following the intervention of the state house of assembly to resolve the issues.   Â
The intervention which was at the instance of the house standing committee on Higher Education, chaired by the member representing Otukpo/Apka state constituency, Honourable Kennedy Agbogo Angbo and presided over by the Majority leader of the state assembly, Honourable Saater Tiseer gave the assurance today after meeting with management of the institution and leadership of the union.
The meeting which lasted for over three hours at the Assembly complex in Makurdi and presided over by the majority leader, Saater Tiseer appealed to the leadership of ASUU to call off the strike, saying the House would do everything within its powers to resolve the issues.
Addressing leaders of the academic staff union of universities, Benue state university chapter, the Chairman, House standing Committee on Higher Education, Honourable Kennedy Agbogo Angbo says, the legislature decided to step in, to ensure that the school reopens as soon as possible as students who were about writing their examinations, are now idling away at home instead of progressing with their studies and compete favorably with their counterparts from across the country.
Although the meeting achieve substantial level of compromise on both divide, ASUU Chairman Benue State University, Dr Kwaghfan Tarnongu explained they will go back to congress and convey the plea of the House to the members at the earliest possible time, soon as they get the letter containing the term of negotiations from the meeting, a point the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tor Iorapuu notes, has beenmanagement disposition in addressing the industrial dispute, as he again assures them on efforts to settle all arrears for earned academic allowances, salaries and promotions but decried inadequate funds as a challenge.
Professor Iorapuu thank the state assembly for intervening in the matter, adding that management would also ensure constant interaction with ASUU going forward.
