Budget Defence: Minister of Finance, Wale Edun Seeks Private Session to Clarify Fuel Subsidy Fund Usage

Wale Edun
The Senate Committee on Appropriations has requested that Finance Minister Wale Edun provide a comprehensive breakdown of the savings from the removal of the fuel subsidy and how these funds have been allocated.
This request came after Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) inquired about the allocation of funds resulting from the subsidy removal in the 2024 budget.
In response, Minister Edun called for a closed-door session to discuss the matter in more detail. The committee chairman, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, then instructed journalists to leave so the session could proceed privately.
Earlier in the day, the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation reviewed the budget proposals of agencies under its oversight, including the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The committee instructed both agencies to revise and resubmit their budget proposals for the 2025 fiscal year. During the discussion, Senate Committee Chairman, Senator Kenneth Eze (APC, Ebonyi Central), expressed concerns about the National Identity Project run by the NOA, questioning its visibility and impact, especially in rural areas.
The Director General of the NOA emphasized the project’s importance, noting its role in promoting a stronger national value system and contributing to overall national development.
