Emphasizes the Challenges of Governing Nigeria

Urges Leaders to Uphold Transparency and Accountability

Former President Muhammadu Buhari shared yesterday that he now supports himself by earning income from renting one of his properties in Kaduna, affirming that he did not enrich himself through corrupt means during his time in office.

Speaking on the complexities of governance in Nigeria, Buhari acknowledged the difficulties faced by leaders in managing the country, urging current and future officials to prioritize transparency and accountability in their leadership.

Buhari made these comments during an address to the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus at the Government House in Katsina, in preparation for the state’s upcoming local government elections on February 15.

The former president pointed out that many Nigerians fail to understand the intricacies of governance, often placing blame on their leaders without recognizing the challenges involved in running the country. He reflected, saying, “Nigeria is a tough country to lead, and most Nigerians don’t grasp this reality until they find themselves in a leadership position.”

Buhari expressed that he looks healthier and better now than he did during his presidency, adding that anyone who has seen him recently would acknowledge this improvement. He reaffirmed that during his time as president, he did not engage in corrupt practices, emphasizing that no one could accuse him of illicit wealth accumulation.

He revealed that he owns only three properties: one in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State, and two in Kaduna. One of these Kaduna houses is now being rented out, providing him with an income to cover his living expenses.

The former president urged Nigerian leaders to embrace transparency and accountability, stressing these values as essential to responsible governance.

Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, who also spoke at the event, encouraged APC leaders and stakeholders to rally support ahead of the upcoming local government elections. He emphasized the importance of securing a victory through fair and transparent elections that truly reflect the people’s will.
