CAF Orders Edo Queens Final to Resume After Extra-Time Controversy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned the outcome of the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying final between Edo Queens and Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies after ruling that the match was not concluded in accordance with competition regulations.

The final, played in Ouagadougou on September 5, ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. Edo Queens subsequently defeated Ampem Darkoa 4-1 in a penalty shootout to win the WAFU-B title and secure the zone’s qualification ticket for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

However, Ampem Darkoa challenged the decision to proceed straight to penalties, arguing that the regulations required the teams to play extra time before a shootout could be used to determine the winner.

Following its review of the protest, CAF found that the required extra time had not been played.

Under Article 72.4 of the WAFU-B competition regulations, a final that remains level after 90 minutes must go into two 15-minute periods of extra time. Penalties are only required if the teams are still tied after the additional 30 minutes.

As a result, CAF has ruled that the penalty shootout that gave Edo Queens victory cannot stand.

The final will now resume from the 2-2 scoreline, with Edo Queens and Ampem Darkoa set to play 30 minutes of extra time. If neither side can break the deadlock during extra time, the winner will then be decided by penalties.

The outcome of the resumed final will determine which team claims the WAFU-B qualification slot for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The decision adds another dramatic twist to a final that had already produced a closely contested battle between the Nigerian and Ghanaian champions.
