Can’t Take Our Only Governor” — Kwankwaso Slams Pressure on Yusuf to Dump NNPP

Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed deep concern over speculations that Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf may defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), describing the situation as distressing and unfortunate.
Speaking before party supporters and key stakeholders in Kano, Kwankwaso cautioned that if Governor Yusuf intends to leave the NNPP, he should be prepared to relinquish his position, stressing that the party cannot afford to lose its only sitting governor.
Kwankwaso questioned the pressure being mounted on Yusuf to defect, noting that the NNPP-led government in Kano represents the movement’s sole executive stronghold. He argued that encouraging the governor to leave amounts to weakening the party deliberately.
He described the ongoing political developments in Kano as shocking, likening them to a nightmare, and said he wished the situation was unreal. According to him, the unfolding events have left many loyal party members confused, worried, and emotionally distressed.
The former governor revealed that he has been engaging behind the scenes with relevant stakeholders to prevent what he described as a dangerous political path that could harm the interests of Kano State and its people.
Kwankwaso emphasized that the NNPP-led administration still has time to deliver meaningful governance if unity is maintained, adding that internal divisions only distract from service delivery and public trust.
He also criticised calls for the NNPP government to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC), referring to such pressure as an attempt to drag Kano into what he described as a rival political structure.
According to Kwankwaso, the political tension in the state has drawn a clear line, which he described as a struggle between opposing values, noting that the people of Kano understand what is at stake.
He lamented the toll the crisis has taken on supporters, revealing that many loyalists are in pain and distress due to the uncertainty surrounding the party’s future. Despite this, he praised their patience and loyalty, describing it as the true spirit of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Kwankwaso condemned internal attacks and social media campaigns against party leaders, warning that such actions amount to self-sabotage and could further destabilize the movement.
He also disclosed that leaders of the APC-led Federal Government had reached out to him, recalling the sacrifices made during the political struggle, including the loss of lives.
Kwankwaso insisted that the NNPP remains the dominant political force in Kano State and dismissed claims that the party is weak. He stated that while the movement is open to alliances with like-minded groups, it will not compromise its core values or political dignity.
He concluded by warning against underestimating Kano State, stressing that despite the APC controlling most states in the country, Kano should not be taken for granted and must be approached with caution.
