Celebration Turns to Mourning: LAUTECH Final-Year Student Fatally Shot on Signing-Out Day

What was meant to be a joyful farewell at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, ended in tragedy on Thursday when a final-year student was reportedly shot dead during a signing-out celebration.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred in the afternoon near the student community, where graduates had gathered in high spirits to mark the completion of their academic journey. The atmosphere, filled with music, cheers, and splashes of signature ink, was suddenly shattered by the sound of gunfire.

The victim, identified by fellow students as a graduating member of the institution, was said to have collapsed on the spot after being hit by a stray bullet. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.

While details remain sketchy, some sources claim the shooting may have been connected to a clash between rival groups in the area. However, university authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the circumstances of the attack.

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is underway to uncover those responsible for the killing. Spokesperson Adewale Osifeso urged students and residents to remain calm, assuring that security has been tightened around the university environment.

The signing-out ceremony, traditionally a vibrant and symbolic rite of passage for LAUTECH students, has now been overshadowed by grief. Many colleagues of the deceased were seen weeping openly, unable to comprehend how a day meant for celebration could turn into a heartbreaking farewell.

As the university community mourns, calls have intensified for improved security measures to protect students both on and off campus, ensuring that no other celebration ends in such devastating loss.
