Churches in Danger: Police Issue Security Alert Over Suspected Terror Plot on Churches in Kogi

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a security warning following credible intelligence indicating a potential terrorist plot against churches in Yagba East Local Government Area, Kogi State. The development has led to increased security awareness and calls for precautionary measures among religious communities.

According to a classified memo dated May 20, 2025, and signed by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Kanwai James, the Divisional Police Officer in Isanlu, religious leaders under the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have been urged to halt night services temporarily and strengthen internal security arrangements.

The document, now circulating among clergy in the area, suggests that armed groups operating in Yagba East and Yagba West have finalized plans to target worship centers.

“In light of the intelligence received, we strongly advise that you inform all churches within Yagba East to remain alert and take necessary security precautions to prevent possible attacks,” the memo states.

Churches have been specifically advised to suspend night vigils and reinforce security using volunteer groups such as the Boys Brigade and other internal units during gatherings. Authorities stress the importance of heightened vigilance and strict adherence to safety protocols.

The police are working closely with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilantes, and hunters to increase patrols, particularly during service times.

Attempts to reach CSP Kanwai for comments were unsuccessful, as phone calls went unanswered.

This warning comes amid a troubling increase in violent incidents and abductions in Kogi West. Notably, both a 90-year-old traditional leader and a 76-year-old retired military officer remain missing after recent kidnappings.

Residents are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious behavior or movements to the nearest security personnel.
