Couple Arrested for Buying Baby from Lagos Traffickers During Naming Ceremony
The Lagos State Police Command has rescued a two-month-old baby boy from a couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Uwam, who were apprehended during the child’s naming ceremony.
According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin on Saturday, the Uwam couple had paid 2,350,000 Naira to acquire the baby from a suspected trafficker, Loretta Nelson. Nelson had previously purchased the baby for 1,450,000 Naira from Pastor Peter Udoh.
Pastor Udoh, in turn, had bought the baby for 500,000 Naira from Gloria Sunday, another suspected trafficker. Sunday allegedly stole the baby on July 11, 2024, prompting the baby’s mother to file a police report.
Following the report, the police acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of Sunday. She subsequently implicated others in the trafficking ring, which resulted in the arrest of Pastor Udoh in Ikene Town, Ogun State, and Loretta Nelson in Festac Town, Lagos.
Hundeyin noted that Nelson admitted to selling the baby for 2,350,000 Naira to Mr. and Mrs. James Uwam. The Uwam couple was arrested during the naming ceremony of the stolen child.
The police have launched an investigation into the case, and the suspects are expected to be charged in court once the investigation is complete.
