Court Sentences Fake Spiritualist to Jail for Internet Fraud

Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin convicted and sentenced Oluwaseun Odeyemi, a fraudster posing as a spiritualist, for internet-related crimes. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged him with two counts involving internet fraud, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretenses.

According to the charges, in December 2023, Oluwaseun convinced a woman named Bose to send him $3,200 worth of gift cards, falsely claiming they would be used to magically influence her ex-husband to return to her. He pretended to be “Lord Hill,” a female spiritualist, and used the email account hillor674@gmail.com to communicate with the victim. This was a violation of Section 321 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 324 of the same law.

In another incident, between August and September 2023, he deceived another victim, Schneider Alina, into sending him $4,500 worth of gift cards by posing as a female spiritualist named “Visions_by_Tendo_12” on Instagram. He promised to use the cards to manipulate her ex-boyfriend into returning to her.

Oluwaseun pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read in court. Following this, the prosecution, led by Sesan Ola, presented evidence including the convict’s statements and $1,000 recovered from him. The prosecution asked the court to sentence him accordingly.

Justice Abdulgafar, after considering the evidence and finding that the prosecution had proven its case, sentenced Oluwaseun to a six-month suspended prison term for each of the two counts. The court also ordered that the $1,000, an iPhone 15, and a 2008 Toyota Camry car, which were seized from him, be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Oluwaseun, who is from Oyo State, defrauded his victims by impersonating a US-based female spiritualist, claiming to possess the ability to help women win back the affection of their estranged

partners.
