Datti Baba-Ahmed: Peter Obi Was Informed About My Attendance at Abure-led Labour Party NEC Meeting

Datti Baba-Ahmed: Peter Obi Was Informed About My Attendance at Abure-led Labour Party NEC Meeting

Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has clarified that his attendance at the recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened by the Julius Abure-led faction of the party was not done in isolation. According to him, Peter Obi was fully aware of his decision to attend.

Speaking on the matter, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that true leadership sometimes requires stepping in to prevent situations from deteriorating. “Leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about responsibility. I may not hold a formal leadership role within the party, but I aspire to serve in such a capacity. And leaders don’t allow issues to fall apart,” he said.

He added, “There are moments when, as a leader or aspiring one, you must rise above sides or factions—just as we saw with the Doctrine of Necessity. Attending that meeting was one of those necessary moments.”

Reflecting on his working relationship with Peter Obi, he noted that both of them understand each other’s strengths and roles. “Had we been sworn in, there would have been times where, if Peter Obi couldn’t act due to his schedule, I would have to step in. And I know he trusts me to do so when needed,” he said.

Datti stressed that his decision to attend the NEC meeting wasn’t taken independently of Obi. “I informed him ahead of time. He’s someone who allows you to take initiative, and I believe that’s what he did in this case. But let it be clear—he was fully in the loop.”
