Dele Momodu Cautions Against Faceless Leadership in Planned Protests

Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu, the veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine, has voiced his concerns regarding the upcoming youth-led nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 to 15.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Momodu highlighted the dangers associated with protests that lack clear leadership. Drawing on his 46 years of experience with protests, which began during his university days at Ife in 1978, he stated: “There’s nothing riskier for a nation than faceless people or a mob leading protests. It is the right of everyone to protest but not the right of anyone to cause mayhem. And government has the right to protect lives and properties.”

Momodu emphasized that while the right to protest is fundamental, it must be exercised in a way that avoids violence and destruction. He reiterated the importance of peaceful demonstrations and warned against the potential chaos that can arise from leaderless movements.

The planned protest is a response to the worsening economic situation in Nigeria, particularly the rising cost of living.
