The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has identified recent adverse weather—rain, lightning, and thunderstorms—as the primary cause of the current fuel shortages and long queues at filling stations nationwide.

At a press conference held at NNPC Towers in Abuja, Dapo Segun, Vice President of Downstream Operations, provided an update on the situation. He explained that the fuel crisis has led to extended wait times for motorists and a surge in black market activity, with prices exceeding N1,000 per liter.

Segun expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to Nigerians, emphasizing that while the NNPC does not wish to offer excuses, the recent weather has significantly impacted fuel distribution. He noted that the NNPC is working diligently to address these challenges.

“The recent rains have complicated our operations,” Segun stated. “For instance, navigation issues in the Estragos channel due to siltation have affected our ability to transport petroleum products. Additionally, lightning and thunderstorms have necessitated the suspension of fuel discharge and evacuation operations to ensure safety.”

Segun also highlighted problems with road infrastructure, which have further disrupted fuel distribution. He assured that the situation in Lagos, which had been particularly acute, is improving as vessels are currently offloading fuel.

Despite the challenges, Segun assured that the NNPC remains committed to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring a steady supply of petroleum products across the country.
