Eight Soldiers Killed, Five Wounded as Military Convoy Hits IED in Borno

At least eight Nigerian soldiers lost their lives, while five others sustained injuries on Sunday after a military convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Damasak, Borno State. The explosive device is believed to have been planted by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Reports indicate that the blast was extremely powerful, judging by the size of the crater and the extensive damage inflicted on a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle involved in the incident. Despite the vehicle’s design to withstand explosions and safeguard its occupants, several of the soldiers killed were inside the MRAP at the time of the attack.
The incident underscores the growing threat posed by roadside explosives and highlights the heavy toll the ongoing insurgency continues to take on Nigerian security forces. Troops remain on the front lines, making immense sacrifices to protect civilian populations and restore stability to conflict-affected communities.
Security analysts have renewed calls for increased investment in advanced counter-IED technologies and equipment, noting that such threats are likely to intensify as the military sustains pressure on terrorist groups, including ISWAP and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS).
The fallen soldiers are being remembered for their courage and commitment, with hopes that their sacrifice will strengthen efforts to bring lasting peace to the region.
