FCT Minister Wike , Cracks Down on Land Grabbers in Abuja and Secures Diplomatic Plot for Embassies

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has ordered the demolition of illegal structures built on a land designated for foreign embassies in Katampe Extension, Abuja, reiterating that the FCT Administration will not tolerate land-grabbing in the nation’s capital.

Barr. Wike made the statement during a media briefing on Friday, March 13, 2026, after personally inspecting the site of the illegal development. The land in question, originally allocated in 2008, was meant for residential use by ten foreign embassies, including Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Syria, Somalia, Serbia and Montenegro, Austria, Senegal, and the Palestine Liberation Organization, according to reports by The Guardian Nigeria.

Illegal Encroachment Met With Swift Action

Speaking at the site, Wike condemned the unauthorized construction, stressing that no level of investment would justify illegal occupation of government-allocated land.

“This land was given to various embassies in 2008. Yet, someone took it upon themselves to start developing without approval from the FCTA. This land-grabbing must stop,” he said. The minister added that the Development Control Department acted promptly to halt the encroachment and restore the plot to its lawful purpose.

Authorities apprehended Alhaji Kabiru Sahara, identified as the person behind the Katampe encroachment. Barr. Wike confirmed that criminal charges are being prepared to deter similar violations in the future, reinforcing the government’s commitment to protect diplomatic properties.

“This is land allocated to foreign embassies. It will be very unfortunate for us to fold our arms and say the place is already developed. No, we won’t allow that. We’ve taken swift action, demolished all unauthorized structures, and informed the embassies that we have reclaimed the land,” the minister said, according to The Punch.

FCT Administration Signals Zero Tolerance

The minister’s visit underscores the FCT Administration’s proactive stance on enforcing land laws and safeguarding plots reserved for diplomatic missions. Observers noted that Wike’s hands-on approach is part of a broader effort to strengthen governance in Abuja’s real estate sector, which has faced repeated challenges from illegal developers.

Beyond the demolition, Barr. Wike conducted an inspection tour of priority infrastructure projects in central and suburban Abuja, including road networks, institutional facilities, and urban beautification schemes. Sources from The Nation Newspaper indicate that most of these projects are on track for completion by May 2026, ahead of the planned celebrations marking the third year of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

“The FCT Administration is committed to orderly urban development, the protection of diplomatic missions, and the timely completion of key projects that enhance the city’s functionality and aesthetic appeal,” the minister stated during the tour.

Broader Implications for Abuja Land Governance

Experts say the decisive action in Katampe sends a strong signal to land speculators and developers across the capital. Analysts cited by Vanguard Nigeria noted that Wike’s intervention may reduce future encroachments on government and diplomatic plots, potentially strengthening Abuja’s credibility as a hub for international missions.

“The clear message from the FCT Minister is that illegal land acquisition will not be tolerated, regardless of the scale of development,” one urban planning analyst said.
