Federal Government Declares December 25, 26 and January 1 Public Holidays

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26, 2025, as well as Thursday, January 1, 2026, public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and the New Year celebrations.

 

The declaration was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

 

According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government.

 

The minister urged Nigerians to reflect on the core values associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, including love, peace, humility and sacrifice. He called on citizens to use the festive period to promote unity and national cohesion.

 

Tunji-Ojo also encouraged Nigerians, irrespective of faith, ethnicity or political affiliation, to pray for peace, improved security and sustainable national development.

 

He further advised citizens to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations, noting the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring a peaceful holiday season.

 

The minister wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, expressing optimism for a more stable and progressive nation in 2026.
