FG Partners with Japan to Boost Rice Production in Nigeria
The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) in Badeggi, Niger State, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to improve rice seed production systems across Nigeria. This collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), demonstrates a shared commitment to advancing the nation’s agricultural development objectives.
Enhancing Infrastructure and Expertise
Under the terms of the agreement, NCRI will receive advanced equipment to support rice cultivation, seed production, testing, inspection, and post-harvest handling. These innovations will help the institute produce high-quality certified rice seeds, which are crucial to overcoming challenges in Nigeria’s rice production chain.
Aiming for Greater Agricultural Efficiency
This partnership marks a significant effort to address inefficiencies within Nigeria’s rice sector, focusing on boosting yields and overall productivity. By improving the supply of certified rice seeds, the initiative aligns with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s mission to achieve food security and reduce dependency on imports.
A Collaborative Effort for Agricultural Transformation
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by representatives from NCRI, JICA, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, reflecting the spirit of cooperation driving this initiative. Both parties expressed confidence that this partnership will play a pivotal role in transforming rice production in Nigeria, modernising the agricultural sector, and strengthening the nation’s position in the global rice market.
