Focus on Governance or Face Dismissal — Bayelsa State Governor, Diri Sends Strong Message to Political Aides

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has issued a strong directive to his political appointees, cautioning them against engaging in any form of political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections. The governor made this clear during the 162nd Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa.
Governor Diri emphasized that his administration is currently focused on governance and developmental projects, not political campaigns. He expressed concern over early political maneuvering, stressing that no appointee has the mandate to engage in election-related activities until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially announces the electoral timetable.
“Everyone has the right to pursue political ambitions, but such aspirations must align with the laws and timelines set by INEC,” Diri stated. He warned that any government official who flouts this directive by making political declarations or engaging in campaign-related activities will be immediately removed from office.
Highlighting the importance of prioritizing governance, the governor urged political actors to remain patient and invest their energy in meaningful ventures that contribute to the state’s progress. He added, “There is a season for everything. This is the time for leadership and development, not electioneering.”
Governor Diri further warned that any political appointee who uses public platforms or social media to make premature political statements would face immediate dismissal. “If you’re eager to contest or make political pronouncements, you must resign your position. Bayelsa cannot afford to be in perpetual campaign mode,” he concluded.
