Former Abia PDP Chairman, Emma Nwaka, Defects to APC

Senator Emma Nwaka, the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking another significant shift within the state’s political landscape as the APC continues to benefit from growing discontent within the PDP.

Nwaka’s high-profile defection comes six months after he quietly resigned from the PDP on June 12, 2024, later revealing the move to the public on August 30, 2024, citing “personal reasons.” Although the former Abia North Senator had remained neutral, refraining from aligning with any political party since his departure from the PDP, it has now been confirmed that he has formally joined the APC.

The news gained traction after a photo surfaced showing Nwaka receiving his APC membership card in his home ward, Oguduasa Ward 5. In the image, Nwaka is seen being presented the party card by Chief Sampson Achi Ndukwe, the APC Chairman of the ward, with Chief Udochi Okorie, APC Chairman for Isuikwuato Local Government, and other officials also present.

Efforts to reach Nwaka for a direct comment were unsuccessful, but sources close to him confirmed that he is now officially a member of the APC. One of his political aides assured that the photo was authentic, adding that Nwaka would share his thoughts on this significant decision with the public at an appropriate time.

Nwaka’s move adds to the growing list of prominent Abia PDP figures leaving the party, particularly after its defeat in the 2023 gubernatorial elections to the Labour Party, which ended the PDP’s two-decade hold on the state. Several key figures, including the former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, have already aligned with the APC, which currently holds power at the national level.

Nwaka, who led Abia PDP from 2010 to 2015, oversaw a period when the party was dominant in the state’s political sphere, further solidifying his prominence in Abia’s political

history.
