Fubara Cancels Wike’s 10,000 Job Initiative, Plans New Recruitment

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has revoked the approval of 10,000 civil service positions initiated by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, and announced a new recruitment process.

Before leaving office, Governor Wike authorized the immediate employment of numerous youths to address vacancies within the state workforce.

However, during a Friday session with stakeholders in Port Harcourt, Fubara explained that he annulled the previous recruitment due to significant flaws and compromises in the process managed by those responsible. He promised a more transparent approach would follow, lamenting that a review of the names selected from the 23 local government areas revealed political favoritism.

Responding to an inquiry, Governor Fubara said, “I understand the concern about the ten thousand jobs. When we assumed office, we reviewed the submitted lists from all local government areas. Upon proper scrutiny, we found that 60% of the names were over-aged and included for political reasons. Employing someone who is 52 years old as a new civil servant is impractical, given their proximity to retirement.”

Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of a genuine employment initiative focused on the future and pledged that his administration’s social contract with the people of Rivers State would remain strong to promote good governance.

In a related development, Fubara urged the Rivers State Waste Management Agency service providers to enhance their efforts in maintaining cleanliness in the city. Represented by Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, the governor delivered this message to the leaders and members of the RIWAMA Service Providers Association during their Solidarity Walk to the Government House Gate in Port Harcourt on Friday.
