Fubara Support Group Disbands, Rebrands as Rivers Grassroots Movement
In a significant move that reflects the changing political dynamics in Rivers State, a key support group of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, known as the Simplicity Movement, has officially disbanded and rebranded as the Rivers Grassroots Movement (RGM).
The announcement was made over the weekend during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Port Harcourt. Leaders of the group said the decision was in full alignment with Governor Fubara’s directive for all political groups linked to him to dissolve in support of the ongoing reconciliation efforts in the state.
Originally launched a year ago at the Kalabari National College field in Buguma, Asari-Toru LGA, the Simplicity Movement had a strong presence in all 23 local government areas of the state.
Speaking at the event, the group’s convener and national leader, Sobomabo Jackrich, explained that the decision to rebrand was driven by commitment to peace and progress, not personal or political gain.
“This is not about rewards or promises. It’s a voluntary, principled decision to show our continued support for a leader who has always put the people first,” Jackrich said.
He emphasized that while the movement under its old name has ended, its mission lives on through the Rivers Grassroots Movement. “We are stepping aside with purpose—not as a retreat, but as a responsible action to support peace and stability,” he added.
Jackrich outlined that the RGM would serve as a non-partisan civic platform dedicated to community empowerment, civic participation, peace-building, and advocacy for good governance.
The group also expressed appreciation to FCT Minister and former Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, for his role in promoting reconciliation, and reiterated their unwavering support for Governor Fubara.
“We are not here to fight or divide. We are Rivers people united by purpose. We remain loyal to Governor Sim Fubara and committed to peace,” Jackrich noted.
Other group leaders echoed the message, calling on supporters across the 23 LGAs to remain calm, cooperative, and focused on the collective goal of a peaceful and prosperous Rivers State.
The broader peace efforts in Rivers have been praised by various stakeholders, including the Rivers Elders Forum, which recently urged President Tinubu to fully restore Governor Fubara’s authority in light of the return to calm.
