Ghana Police Arrest 11 Nigerians in Tamale Crackdown on Drugs, Cybercrime

Authorities in northern Ghana have apprehended 11 Nigerian nationals in a coordinated security operation targeting suspected drug trafficking and internet fraud activities in Tamale.
The arrests were carried out by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team of the Ghana Police Service during an intelligence-led raid conducted on March 30. As reported by the Ghana News Agency, the operation was spearheaded by Chief Inspector Abu Issahaku and involved a deployment of about 35 officers across multiple locations within the metropolis.
Security operatives first moved into the Yung area, where a suspect identified as Mohammed Hudu, 28, was taken into custody after allegedly being found with quantities of Tramadol. Acting on follow-up intelligence, the team extended the operation to Wamale, leading to the arrest of 10 additional suspects believed to be linked to cyber fraud networks.
According to details cited by Joy News Ghana, items recovered during searches at the premises include substances suspected to be cannabis, additional Tramadol sachets, as well as electronic devices such as laptops, mobile phones, and SIM cards , tools often associated with online fraud operations.
The suspects, whose ages range from late teens to late twenties, are currently being held at the Northern Regional Police Headquarters, where investigations are ongoing.
Security analysts note that the arrests highlight Ghana’s continued efforts to clamp down on transnational crime, particularly cyber fraud and illicit drug distribution, which have increasingly drawn regional attention. As Citi Newsroomobserved in its coverage, authorities are intensifying intelligence-driven operations to disrupt such networks and enhance public safety.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to announce formal charges, but officials say the suspects are cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to unravel the extent of the alleged criminal activities.
