Good news: Everton will be outraged by £40m Manchester United …

Last season was tough for Everton as the club were deducted a total of eight points from two separate Premier League PSR breaches.

The club still managed to retain their Premier League status but it felt evident that the club needed to reinforce their team across the board.

That explains why a number of players have already been recruited this summer, including Lyon ace Jake O’Brien, as Sean Dyche aims to strengthen.

It’s clear to see that rather than just surviving like previous seasons, the Toffees want to ensure their place in England’s top flight sooner rather than later this time around.

The Merseyside club managed to avoid further PSR sanctions this season by making smart sales such as Lewis Dobbin’s to help get them over the line.
However, sales such as Dobbin’s aren’t likely on the cards for teams such as Manchester United, especially not after the club were given an “exceptional allowance” of £40million for COVID in 2022.

“United is very interesting,” Borson said live on talkSPORT [6 August]. “We do have quite a lot of information about United because they quarterly report in the US.

“We know that they’ve told us that the end-of-year results will have a £660million top-line and about £140million EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization).

“Which also tells us certain things about their costs, now bottom line is when you drag that down on the 3-year assessment, United would have failed PSR for the season just gone say for two things: One, it appears that [Manchester United] were given an exceptional allowance of £40million for COVID in 2022.

“The most that any other club got in that period was around £1million. It also seems that they have been given an allowance for around about £35million of exceptional cost relating to the share sale to Ratcliffe.”

Not only does this outline that the Red Devils have been given an unfair advantage over Everton but it also shows that the Premier League haven’t treated the clubs fairly.

While some may ask what does it matter now as the Toffees managed to retain their Premier League status, it’s more the principle of the matter that should outrage fans of not only Everton but others such as Nottingham Forest.

If all the top-flight clubs were given an allowance to this extent, it’s unlikely that players such as Dobbin and Tim Iroegbunamwould have been sold to abide by the Premier League’s PSR.

The Toffees have managed to find their way around recruiting extra bodies and improving their side but if the club had an extra £40million waivered from their books, there’s no doubt that Dyche’s men would find themselves in a better place.

All in all, it feels unfair that one team is getting treated differently from the others despite all of them competing in the same league.
