Gunmen Abduct Six Worshippers in Ondo
Panic gripped a quiet community in Ondo State after unknown gunmen stormed a place of worship and abducted six congregants during a service, further heightening security concerns across the state.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has left residents in shock and fear, as the attackers reportedly invaded the church premises while prayers were ongoing. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen arrived suddenly, fired shots into the air to disperse worshippers, and forcefully marched six individuals to an undisclosed location.
Community members described the attack as brazen and deeply disturbing, noting that the victims included both men and women who had gathered for spiritual fellowship. The assailants were said to have operated for several minutes without resistance before fleeing through a nearby bush path.
Security agencies in Ondo State have since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. Police authorities confirmed the abduction and assured the public that tactical teams, in collaboration with local vigilantes, have been deployed to comb surrounding forests and rescue the victims unharmed.
A spokesperson for the state police command appealed to residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could aid ongoing investigations. He emphasized that efforts were underway to track the kidnappers and prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
The abduction has sparked renewed calls for improved security across rural communities in the state. Religious leaders and civil society groups have urged the government to strengthen intelligence gathering and increase patrols around worship centres, schools, and other public spaces.
Family members of the abducted worshippers have expressed anguish over the development, pleading with the kidnappers to release their loved ones without harm. Some residents have also called for more visible security presence, particularly in remote areas where criminal elements often exploit limited surveillance.
This latest incident adds to growing concerns about the safety of citizens in parts of the state, as authorities continue efforts to restore confidence and ensure the protection of lives and property. Investigations remain ongoing as security operatives intensify search operations in a bid to secure the safe return of the victims.
