Gunmen Kidnapped Female Student, Stray Bullet Claims Woman’s Life in Delta State Attack

Gunmen have kidnapped a female student, Doris Jonathan Oke, while a stray bullet claimed the life of a woman in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State. The victim, a Higher National Diploma student of Mass Communication at Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, was abducted after the gunmen failed to capture their intended male target who was with her.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night, February 5, 2025, along the polytechnic road. A community source, speaking under the condition of anonymity, revealed that the gunmen ambushed the vehicle, firing shots indiscriminately, and took the student when the man managed to flee.

“The man was driving on the polytechnic road when a group of about five armed men blocked his vehicle and began shooting. He quickly opened the door and ran into the nearby bush,” the source said. “However, the girl sitting on the driver’s side couldn’t escape, and the attackers abducted her after shooting at the vehicle.”

The source further described the scene as chaotic, with people fleeing for safety amid the gunfire. As of the afternoon, the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N10 million.

Another source, who also wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, reported that a stray bullet killed a woman and injured a man during the shooting. “A bullet from the attack struck and killed a woman who owned a shop under the power line, while another man was shot in the leg before the student was taken,” the source added.

The Chairman of the Ogwashi-Uku vigilante group, Mr. Hery Chukwuka, confirmed the abduction and death, stating that the Lexus 330 involved in the incident had been parked at the Ogwashi-Uku police station.

Police spokesperson Bright Edafe acknowledged the attempted kidnapping but could not confirm the student’s abduction. “There was an attempt to kidnap, but the man managed to escape, leaving his car behind. We have recovered the vehicle, but attempts to contact the man have been unsuccessful. If we locate him, he can provide more information about the incident.”
