In a recent assault on two communities in Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, gunmen suspected to be armed herders killed at least six individuals. The attacks took place on Friday, targeting the Iwari and Olegagbane communities.
According to local sources, one person was killed in Iwari, while five others lost their lives in Olegagbane. A resident named Adayi reported, “Armed assailants struck Iwari on Friday, killing one person and injuring several others. Later that day, they moved to Olegagbane and killed five more.”
Phillip Ebenyakwu, Chairman of the LGA, confirmed the incidents and expressed alarm over the persistent violence. He stated, “The attackers came, committed murder, theft, and looting before fleeing the areas. I am in touch with security forces who are addressing the situation.”
Ebenyakwu noted the growing crisis, with over 2,000 people displaced by attacks from armed herders and about nine villages having been overrun. “The displaced population is vast, and while the State Emergency Management Agency has provided some aid, it remains inadequate,” he added.
The state police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, indicated that she was not aware of the latest incidents.
