Hon. Oluwole Oke: The Parliamentary Powerhouse Shaping Nigeria’s Foreign Policy Future

Hon Busayo Oluwole Oke, a ranking member of Nigeria parliament was appointed the Chairman House committee on Foreign Affairs by the Honourable Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Rt Hon. Tajudeen Abbas. He has briefly served as the chairman of the house committee on judiciary before his redeployment to the Foreign Affairs committee. During his very short yet impactful stint at the judiciary committee, he agitated for an increase in the salary of judges and also called for a stronger judicial system in Nigeria.

A ranking member of the National Assembly, Hon Busayo Oluwole Oke has previously led various committees at the lower house which includes Procurement, Defence and Public account in the past. This sterling achievement has made him a force to be reckoned with as an highly informed and resourceful parliamentarian. .

At a time when our dear nation is poised to move beyond mere cosmetic rebranding to thorough revamping and repositioning of our image amongst international community and in conformity with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, The leadership and members of various house committees at the National Assembly has hit the ground running. It is imperative that we mention the unprecedented oversight functions currently being carried out by the leadership and members of the House committee on foreign affairs ably led by the indefatigable Hon Busayo Oluwole Oke.

The committee has continued to hold strategic sessions with the heads of our nation’s various missions across the world. The intention is to bring them up to speed with the ongoing growth and development our dear nation is witnessing under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and also to ascertain that they are carrying out their duties in conformity with the constitutional provisions that bind their existence. The versatile team has also put it upon themselves to advise, assist and collaborate with other foreign missions on trade, investment and social development while also harnessing peace, security and economic progression. The committee has visited over fifty foreign missions and is still counting.

It is important to note that in a reciprocal show of gratitude and appreciation, a number of foreign countries representative has also paid working visit to the office of the Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs, these includes but not limited to the North Korea Ambassador to Nigeria and his team, the United Kingdom foreign service officials, The United States of America foreign affairs delegations, The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Nigeria and his delegation, The foreign affairs officials of the People’s Republic of China just to mention but a few.

Nigeria as a sovereign state enjoys diverse level of relationships with countries around the world. We are a member of the commonwealth states, the United Nations, Ecowas and many other organisations and we have proper ministry for foreign affairs where decisions on international alignment, bilateral agreements and handshakes across the borders are adequately provided for under the leadership of a highly revered Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. Since being sworn in as the Minister for Foreign Affairs he has been able to boost our nation’s international relations and has provided an enviable leadership for the ministry,

The assignment of members of parliaments as pronounced by the law are majorly oversights functions, law making, amending of existing laws hence they stand totally aloof from that of the ministry of foreign affairs.

The House Committee on foreign affairs under the leadership of Hon Busayo Oluwole Oke will not relent on delivering on its mandate to keep carrying out oversight functions on our foreign missions, the committee will not be deterred nor distracted on their assignment to help reposition and rejuvenate our foreign missions across the world while help repositioning our nation amongst committee of states as well.
