How Architect Asomba Andrew Egbuonu was Murdered Days Before Mother’s Burial in Anambra

Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, a respected architect based in Port Harcourt and originally from Anambra, was tragically murdered by gunmen in Nnewi just four days before his mother’s burial. Egbuonu, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), was also a prominent member of the profession, having served as the Chairman of the Architectural Exhibitions and Competitions Committee of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and previously led the NIA Rivers State chapter.
The heartbreaking news was shared by Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, General Secretary of the NIA, who confirmed that Egbuonu was attacked and fatally wounded by unknown assailants near his hometown. At the time of his death, he was in Nnewi to finalize the arrangements for his mother’s funeral, scheduled for November 21, 2024.
In his statement, Ibeanu expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “With profound sadness, I announce the passing of our dear colleague, Arc. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu FNIA, KSJ. He passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from injuries sustained in an armed attack. He was on his way home to make final preparations for his mother’s burial.”
Ibeanu further called on members of the architectural community to pray for Egbuonu’s soul and to offer support and strength to his grieving family during this difficult time.
