How Awujale Played a Key Role in Forming APC and Making Buhari President

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the founder of Global Community Citadel Church, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honoring former President Muhammadu Buhari with a state burial. He also paid tribute to the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who passed away on the same day as Buhari.
Pastor Bakare highlighted the crucial role the Awujale played in Nigerian politics, saying, “The APC wouldn’t have come into existence without his important involvement.”
He explained that the Awujale organized a crucial meeting at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, where the agreement to create the APC was reached. “Throughout, he remained impartial, backing any initiative that promoted good governance, national unity, peace, and a stronger Nigeria.”
Bakare described the Awujale as a respected elder statesman, a patriot, and a mentor who was deeply committed to the nation until the very end.
He also emphasized that the APC merger marked a historic moment: it was the first true alliance between progressive leaders from the North and South of Nigeria.
Reflecting on the passing of both leaders, Bakare said their deaths marked an important turning point that few truly understand.
As a former member of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Bakare recalled Buhari’s fairness and tolerance. He praised Buhari for opening the doors of politics to many Nigerians, including religious leaders like himself.
Bakare shared a personal memory of how Buhari insisted that he remain his running mate during their political journey.
He urged Nigerians to recognize the message left by Buhari and Oba Adetona: Nigeria’s strength lies in unity and inclusiveness, not division or a one-party system.
“Their partnership helped create a political environment where a strong opposition could thrive and hold the ruling party accountable,” he said.
Bakare also reminded everyone that building a united nation requires tolerance and inclusion. He challenged the false labels placed on Buhari, noting that despite misconceptions, Buhari was one of the most tolerant Muslims, allowing Christian pastors to participate in governance.
He highlighted Buhari’s legacy in electoral reforms, including the Not Too Young To Run Act and the Disability Act, which empowered youth and people with disabilities to take on leadership roles.
Finally, Bakare praised Buhari’s integrity in politics, stating that instead of engaging in mudslinging, Buhari preferred to appeal directly to the electorate.
