How Fire Burn Down Market in Lagos

By Innocent Raphael

A massive fire has ravaged Tejuosho Market in the Yaba district of Lagos State, causing extensive damage to properties valued at millions of naira.

The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in significant destruction, though fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported.

The blaze began around 12:30 pm at the market, which includes both commercial shops and residential areas, situated along Tejuosho Canal. Initial reports indicate that the fire started in a room where food was left cooking on a gas stove, which then spread rapidly to various wooden structures, prompting panic and evacuations.

Emergency services, including LASEMA, the Lagos Fire Service, Nigeria Police, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Security Watch, quickly responded to the scene to tackle the inferno.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, and Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, provided updates separately, assuring the public that the fire was being contained and rescue efforts were in progress.

“Upon arrival, it was found that several wooden shanties along Tejuosho Canal had been consumed by the flames,” Oke-Osanyintolu reported.

Adeseye added, “Firefighting teams are working diligently to prevent the fire from reaching nearby buildings, including the NTA, Oba Tejuosho House, and other residential areas. Rescue operations continue.”
