How Kogi Polytechnic Dismisses Lecturers Over Sexual Harassment Allegations
The Kogi State Government has taken decisive action against several lecturers at Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja due to allegations of sexual harassment involving students.
Isah Emmanuel Ojodunwene, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo on Student Affairs, announced this during a meeting aimed at adopting a model anti-sexual harassment policy for tertiary institutions in Kogi State.
While Ojodunwene did not specify the number or identities of the dismissed lecturers, he emphasized the administration’s strict stance against sexual harassment.
He remarked, “Now is the time to address sexual harassment seriously. Recently, we witnessed a tragic incident involving a 19-year-old girl murdered by a 20-year-old at Federal University Lokoja for ritual purposes. This highlights the dangers faced by vulnerable individuals.”
He noted that various institutions in Kogi State have reported instances of sexual harassment by faculty members. “At Kogi Polytechnic, some lecturers have been terminated, and others are currently facing legal action regarding these allegations. We urge all educational leaders in Kogi to take a firm stand on this matter.”
Ojodunwene affirmed that Governor Ododo is committed to tackling social vices and maintaining the welfare of citizens. “Our principal has made it clear that anyone found guilty of sexually harassing students will face the full consequences of the law.”
He encouraged students to come forward if they experience sexual harassment, stressing that speaking out is essential for identifying and addressing such issues. “There should be no fear of stigmatization; even married students should report incidents to help us take appropriate action.”
He concluded by stating, “Regardless of a lecturer’s status, if they engage in harassment and there is sufficient evidence, they will be held accountable.”
