How Labour Party Chairman was Killed by Suspected Herdsmen in Benue

Gunmen believed to be armed herdsmen have killed Mr. Sunday Oche, the Labour Party (LP) chairman of Igumale Ward 1 in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024.

Oche was attacked while on his farm with five others, who were ambushed by the herders. He was shot and killed, while the others sustained gunshot wounds and managed to escape.

According to a close source, Oche and his companions had been assisting a widow on her farm. As they were returning, the herders blocked the road and opened fire. The attackers also stole two motorcycles from the group.

The source revealed that the victims were initially taken to Mogul in Igumale, where Oche’s body was recovered by local youths and later deposited at a local facility. The injured have been hospitalized, and the family plans to bury Oche on Thursday.

The source called for government intervention to address the ongoing violence by herdsmen in the region.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer SP Catherine Anene stated she was not yet aware of the incident. Labour Party Publicity Secretary Tersoo Orbunde confirmed the attack, noting that the police have been informed and arrangements for Oche’s burial are underway.
